As a previous commenter noted; this book primarily focuses on the Japanese version of Mahjong. Specifically, the "classical" rules from the Japan Mahjong Association, not to be confused with Riichi. It does cover some of the aspects of Riichi but it makes no mention of Dora indicators and other contemporary features. It also talks a little about American Mahjong, but again it fails to completely cover it. What the book does extremely well is in the third section, which discusses strategy, and how to build good waits. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants a good read about basic strategies for Chinese and Japanese style mahjong.

A thorough introduction to Mahjong with especial focus on the hugely popular Japanese variation(s) of the game. Much still applies to all versions of the game, but it's something to be aware of when considering the purchase of this book. That said, the section on Mahjong strategies is still applicable across most more traditional game variations (probably not the American versions though), and provides many clear examples.
