In color, weight, and overall appearance it, Shin Kaya is remarkably similar in appearance to genuine Kaya. This board will impress without carrying the full cost of a Kaya. This board is made with several pieces of wood joined together, preventing warping and ensuring that the visible surfaces show the best face of the wood. Pieces are expertly selected and joined together to appear almost seamless. The lines are individually hand drawn.

Most shin-kaya (Japanese for ''alternative kaya'') boards from Japan or Korea are made of spruce wood from Alaska or Siberia. Our shin-kaya Go boards are made of Tibet spruce wood from Yunnan Province in southern China. This type of wood is called picea asperata in Latin and is sometimes called ''dragon spruce'' or ''Tibet Spruce''.

  • One 2'' (5cm) thick Tibet Spruce (Shin-Kaya) wood board
  • This board is made of two to three pieces of select Tibet Spruce joined together
  • Board measures 18-1/4''L x 17''W x 2''H (46.5cm x 43cm x 5cm)
  • Booklet on how to play go, "The Way to Go", by Karl Baker.
  • Please see our other listings for Go sets and stones!

very happy with it. Can't expect more for this price. Match perfectly with the clam stone set I ordered together with it.

This board is beautiful. I am a little disappointed that it isn't one pure slab of wood, but it says right in the description that it is 2-3 pieces of wood joined together. You can only notice that it is 3 pieces when you take time and look very carefully for the seam; this is how well it was constructed. This is a soft wood! My Go bowls have a carrying bag, and the bottom of the carrying bag has four metal beads that act as feet. I set this carrying board on top of the board to move it somewhere, and the top of the Go board received a small wound in the form of a scratch. Again, it isn't too noticeable, but I'm sad that my baby isn't 'pure' anymore. :-D What kind of stones match well with this board? I have a set of double-convex Yunzi stones and a set of glass stones, all purchased from YM imports. The Yunzi stones are nice, but they don't make a clean, satisfying 'thump' when they strike the board. The glass stones, on the other hand, do give a clean, 'snap' sound when played, so I would recommend the glass stones, even if they may be cheaper. Great value!
