Luzhanqi (Land Battle Chess), also known as Junqi (Army Chess), is one of the most popular chess variants in China. Derived from Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) this exciting board game has many aspects in common with the Western game Stratego.

Each piece represents a military unit which moves around various geographic features that have different properties such as railroad, headquarters, camp and so on that determine gameplay. As in Stratego, the value of each piece remains hidden to the other side.

I'm incredibly chuffed with this little set - a definite improvement on the usual paper boards. The pieces, although small, are clearly marked and pleasantly chunky to the touch, and the board is a really lovely bit of craftsmanship, the rich mahogany tone of the wood perfectly complimenting the delicate gold tracery of the playing grid. The lack of instructions might be a problem to those not familiar with the game, but should you need one, a pamphlet explaining the rules can be downloaded here: http://ancientchess.com/page/free-downloads.htm It's actually (in my opinion) a better designed game than the similar Stratego, being faster and rather more tactical thanks to the design of the board. All in all, I'm extremely pleased with this beautiful set, and would recommend it very highly. It's a lovely and unusual addition to any board game enthusiast's collection.
