I was debating about getting this set with some of the reviews on Amazon. There was a Memorial Day sale for this item and decided why not. I've been looking for a Tavla board. Tavla is the same as backgammon but with some slight rule differences. The style of board Tavla is played on is wooden. With this 19 inch wood veneer backgammon board. This seemed like an inexpensive board I can use for Tavla. I must have gotten lucky or the quality control has gotten better. I had none of the quality issues that were expressed in the Amazon reviews. Closes completely flush and level. No chips or cracks. Everything was top notch as far as the construction of the board. What I don't like about the set. The Checkers while beautiful in color is not what I want for Tavla. They need to be finger dished checkers. The dice are not matching the color of the Checkers and are too big for Tavla. Tavla uses 8 mm dice and are hand tossed rather than in a dice cup. Which brings me to the dice cups. They are made well and are wooden inside and out. Which means that you will get more clacking noise from shaking the dice in the cups. Since I am using this set as a Tavla set rather than a Backgammon set. I have no use for the dice cups. If you don't like the clacking noise from the dice being shaken in the cups and rolled out on the board. This may not be the set for you. However if you like to feel like you are somewhere in Turkey or Greece at a cafe and want to hear the clacking noise. This set is not bad if you don't mind the flat Checkers. Oh one other thing I didn't like was the doubling cube. Too small! I have a 3/4" Bakelite cube that fits better with the set. Even though Tavla isn't played with a cube. In case you want to play with a doubling cube. It should at least be 3/4" instead of the same size as the dice. I have 8 mm dice and have found a set of checkers that are finger dished and that they will fit this board. So now it will feel more like a Tavla board than a Backgammon board.
